Title: Tuesday Night
Author: Harper Kingsley
World: Universe B/AU
Characters: Sunfire (Seth Payne), Teen Steel (Tony Randolph)
Genre: superhero, sci-fi, m/m
Summary: In a universe where the events of "Pulse of the City" never happened, Tony has handled his grief badly. Thankfully he has a friend like Seth to help him pick up the pieces of his life.
Seeing that the nurse was done checking Tony's vitals, he asked "Can we have a moment alone, please?"
"Of course. If you need anything, I'll be right at the desk out there." She pointed through the window at the nurses station.
"Thank you," he said. "I'll call if I need you."
He waited for her to leave, then leaned closer to Tony. "I'm here," he said. "I can't stay for too long, but I'm here now."
He hated seeing Tony like this, but he had to believe that Tony was going to wake up and be all right. To think anything else felt like a betrayal.
Tony was strong and determined. He would refuse to let himself die. So Seth would believe that he would be walking around in a few days, ready to rejoin the team.
"You need to wake up. You know how much I hate being in a hospital. People always get sick in places like this. Someone forgets to wash their hands one time, and suddenly people are dropping like flies. I don't want to catch the plague because you're too lazy to get out of bed."
There was no response. Tony continued to lay still with the machines breathing for him. Seth settled in to wait with him a while.
Sunfire was needed on the streets. But Seth kept a few minutes for himself and stayed beside Tony. It was time only counted in minutes, but it was something he needed to do. For his own mental well-being.
Nobody could be the hero all the time.
